Stohlquist Descent Review

The Stohlquist Descent is recognized from the Zambezi up to the Colorado and down to the Futaleufú as an ideal option for unplanned big water swims on expedition river trips. Many guides and whitewater kayakers swear by this PFD for its durability, comfort, side zip entry & preciously placed high float foam.

The features on this PFD make it a professional choice for expedition big water guides, swift water rescue instructors and whitewater kayaking instructors. The easy side entry zip, two buckles and cow-tail quick release make it a go-to for expedition river guides who remove/put-on their PFD 5+ times per day.

The shape of the PFD is comfortable for both men and women with a large chest & the front pocket holds an optional custom tiny throw bag or a large quantity of lip balm, sunscreen, toothpicks, granola bars, keys, tools and crushed beer cans (if you happen to find those along the way).

You can chose between putting a quick release knife in the front or back for easy access. The lapels are sturdy yet non adjustable so make sure you get the correct size. I am 5'11'' and wear a size small/medium. Be sure to allow enough time for an exchange should you buy online and realize you need a different size, the lapels will let you know immediately if they fall off your shoulder once the main body of the PFD has been tightened for use. The Wrapture foam forms to your body shape after a little wearing in. Ribs don't feel as compressed.

Ideal Uses

The Stohlquist Descent is great for expedition big water guides, day trips, swift water rescue instructors and whitewater kayaking instructors alike. It is a rescue vest, alas, of course you can remove the cow-tail. The (optional built-in throw bag) front pocket is large and zippered whilst the mesh pocket on top holds micro-trash, zinc, lip balm, etc. This PFD will not fit all body types as the lapels are non-adjustable but it's worth experimenting with a different size before making the call.

How does the Descent PFD feel in the water?

High float when swimming high volume whitewater pushing 20,000+ CFS. Moderately breathable with minimal to moderate coverage when it comes to hot desert environments. This PFD has three pockets: one large pocket with a zipper and loop for attaching keys, tools, etc; one medium mesh pocket with open top entry and the "garage pocket" on top has a small D-ring where you can attach and stow whistles, river knifes, etc.

The pockets provide a challenge for paddle raft guides getting back into their raft fast, as the front of the PFD protrudes out when front pocket is packed with the tiny Stohlquist custom PFD throw bag. Great spot to slide hands for warmth near heart during cold days on the water.

Surprisingly durable for many years in the constant blare of hot sun in the Grand Canyon for months on end. The special foam used in making this PFD don't compress the ribs as your body shapes the foam over time. The top two straps prevent ride up almost entirely when secured tightly.

Metal ring in the back for cow-tail attachment is secured by velcro, not noticeably helpful or harmful. This PFD includes a crotch strap attachment for those working in an industry where securing with an additional crotch strap is necessary. Brilliant reflective straps on front handle, back and logo for low light conditions.

How tough is the Stohlquist Descent?

This PFD loves being clipped onto helmets, skirts, carabiners, throw bags and water bottles... then tossed onto the back of a truck with no shocks driving across the desert in the middle of nowhere Africa. This PFD has thick lapels of a strength which is noteworthy. The color may fade after one season in the sun but the flotation holds up as well as the zipper and buckles. Zipper passes all sand blasting tests. This PFD appears to have been made by someone who boats, cares and knows how to use an industrial sewing machine.

Important Considerations for the Descent

It is worth noting that the small strap on the left side front of the PFD is made for your cow-tail locking carabiner. This strap is not very strong and the carabiner is likely to occasionally come loose. Please also remember that if your carabiner on your cow-tail is not locking, it is recommended that you replace it with a locking carabiner... keeping it locked when on the river. The only obvious error to this PFD is the black rubber-like material which covers the sternum wears off after 4-5 years and will permanently stain your shirt black - then you know it's time to get a new Descent. This negative is actually a positive reminder to replace your PFD every few seasons if you're running high volume whitewater, as UVA & UVB light can lessen the flotation every year.

SIZE                       CHEST
Extra Extra Large:   48” - 54”
Large/Extra Large:  40” - 46”
Small/Medium:       33” - 39”

The Descent is also compatible with the Stohlquist with the add-a-bouy bladder system. This system allows the user to upgrade the PFD which will increase the flotation rating by about 5 lbs. The upgrade retails for an additional $24.95 and you can pick one up here.

Is the Stohlquist Descent worth the cost?

If you shop around on the net you can get this PFD for between $180-$230. It could be your one and only PFD for all water activities but it does look and feel like a type-V rescue vest. It is heavy as many expensive items seem to be. That said, when I am dropping into Lava Falls in a lightweight paddle raft... I feel relaxed knowing that when worn correctly, this PFD will pop you back up fast.
