Nov 27 The Trail Less Traveled: Lisa Sackville

An interview with an international adventure guide

Lisa has been working as an international adventure guide for the past two decades in the field of whitewater, mountain biking, sea kayaking, ice climbing & skiing. Lisa now calls Queenstown, NZ home & balances her time between Aeoterora and Alaska. Lisa also represented the US women’s rafting team. Lisa has the most amazing survival story, which she shares during the show of an incident when she was in her early twenties & how she fought for her life & lost all her toes from frostbite. Lisa was locked in a flash freezer for 3.5 hours in temperatures as low as -60 degrees F. Mandela caught up with Lisa in her home town of Queenstown, NZ to learn more about Lisa’s adventures.

Mandela van Eeden

Growing up, I spent a season in Africa, a season in Montana and various seasons traveling the world with my parents. I was raised on a nature reserve at the most southern point of South Africa and in the mountains and open plains of Montana. When I was 17 I found out you could get paid to run whitewater. I guide in Montana, Idaho, New Zealand, Grand Canyon & Southern Africa. In addition to guiding, I play didgeridoo, teach Ashtanga Yoga and produce/host the adventure radio series/podcast, “The Trail Less Traveled.” I travel around the world in order to interview adventurers and storytellers in their natural habitat. The show is dedicated to documenting humanity by collection interviews from the most remote locations around the world. No matter how many times I guide a section of wilderness or river… every time I see it through the eyes of someone seeing it for the first time, I am reminded of the importance of sharing wild places. The more people who experience these places—the more people will fight to protect them!

In our latest article (link in bio) we're talking about that strange popcorny smell that seems to spring up right when it gets warm. Fungus and bacteria take a huge toll on your body and your gear. So when your buddy be like, bro you stink, take that seriously because it can quickly lead to some equipment and medical issues.

In today's quick lesson, we're talking about how to achieve a little more power out of your strokes when you're hitting a big wave. Giving the thwart a little kick when you're pushing through a wave can give you a bit of an edge in your paddling. To do this effectively, you want to make sure you are really biting into the water with your blade and planting a good forward stroke. Remember, it is about moving the boat, not the paddle or the water. If you have a well coordinated team, you can do this in any paddle configuration to gain a little more of a push over short distances. In today's quick lesson, we're talking about layered safety. This is where we engage in safety practices with redundant backups in place. This can be as simple as 2 people in different places with throw bags, or a little more complex with shore based safety and a raft in an eddy below the shore based safety to help pick up swimmers. It's especially important coming out of winter when you may have boaters who haven't paddled in a while to just make sure we're watching each other's backs super well. Stay safe out there, friends!
