Abiding & Enduring

This past June, my fiancé, Sam, and I were invited to join an OARS rafting trip on behalf of the outdoor apparel brand Chums. We committed immediately to the 6-day trip, but I had never been on a multi-day rafting trip so I really didn’t know what to expect. Our route was to take us approximately 84 miles along Idaho’s Wild & Scenic Main Salmon River, fondly called the “River of No Return” by early prospectors. Sam was over the moon excited about it, but as the trip drew nearer, I began to reconsider my early excitement.

Soul Rafter - Slab Creek

A relatively unknown run, the Slab Creek run of the American River is difficult to catch with water. Mostly kept below runnable levels by the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD), the section is a showcase of Californian features. Located just outside of Coloma California, upstream of the very popular South Fork American Chili Bar and Gorge sections, Slab Creek contains large boulders, clear waters, and pool drop characteristics.

The Evolution of Rafting in Russia

16 years ago, I moved to the Caucasus Mountains, a region with an abundance of rivers. I had decided to stop combining military service with boating, but at that time if you told ordinary people that you wanted to invite them rafting they wouldn't understand you. Almost no one knew what rafting was. There was not one commercial company in my region that offered river rafting, so I decided to be the first.

Soul Rafter - North Yuba River

Sometimes you have good luck, sometimes you have bad, but Melissa is always lucky. And as soon as she decided to sit out one rapid on the Yuba, I should have questioned my decision to run it.. Eighth episode of Soul Rafter's 19 rivers in 2019 campaign where Rafting Magazine Ambassador Nick Prete attempts to paddle 19 new rivers in 2019.

The Trail Less Traveled: Glenn Goodrich

This episode in particular was recorded on the edge of the Colorado River at Pipe Springs, where the Bright Angel Trail meets the Colorado River. I sat with my main river guide mentor, Glenn Goodrich, to talk to him about running over 445 rivers of the world since 1977. Glenn has been guiding since 1977 & when he is not guiding on the river... he is thoughtfully running rivers all over the world just for fun! Glenn has made multiple first descents around the world and doesn't have any plans for slowing down. Glenn's personal goal is to run 500 rivers before he retires.

Gulf Hagas Rafting Expedition

Ask any class V boater who has paddled Gulf Hagas in Maine and I'd bet at least 9 out of 10 will tell you that it is Maine’s best run. It is a beautiful canyon that has been enjoyed by paddlers and hikers for decades now but I had only seen it in books and videos. It has a steep creek flowing through a deep gorge that has some very attractive waterfall drops and challenging rapids with high consequences.
